What is the most popular name on Earth and what names are trending this year?
Do you know the meaning of your name? Do you know how many people have your name around the world? What's the most popular name globally? Let's find out!
My People,
Everyone of us has a name. If you are Nigerian, you probably have multiple names. If you’re American, you most likely have a first name and a middle name. Names are markers, they place us in a family and help frame out stories. In Nigeria (and many other countries around the world), names are given with intentional meanings and stories. In Yoruba land, children are named based on circumstances surrounding the birth of the child or prayers that the parents have for the child. Often, throughout Nigeria, you can tell where a Nigerian is from based on the language of their name. In some cases, you can even tell the family house of a person based on their oríkì (praise name).

So, what’s the most popular name in the world? Let’s start here.
In the US, the Social Security agency tracks and publishes name trends each year. It is a helpful tool so that parents can find out which names are popular and which ones are not. The top 10 names for 2021 are shown in the image below:
So, what’s the most popular name in the world? The answer may be Muhammad. Just by itself, Muhammad is the 7th most popular name in the UK, however, when you include other variations such as Mohammed, Mohammad, Muhammed, Mohamed Mouhamed, and so on, it becomes the most popular male name by a mile. The name is especially common because many Muslim boys are named after the Prophet of Islam and is believed to be the most popular male name around the world.
